Metallography

Understanding the constituents and internal structures of metals and alloys.

Structural Integrity Matters

A material’s microstructure can greatly influence its mechanical properties and overall fit-for-purpose. Two materials may share an identical chemistry however, variations in grain size, distribution and origination can result in significant differences in their physical properties, such as strength, toughness, ductility, hardness, tensile, corrosion and wear resistance. These differences can impact heavily on a material’s suitability for its intended application.

We use metallographic techniques to understand the constituents and internal structures of metals and alloys, providing insight into the physical and mechanical properties of the material being studied. Metallography is the primary techniques used for evaluating the following;

  • Defect and fracture mechanisms
  • Heat treatment effectiveness
  • Inclusion identification
  • Ductile and grey iron rating
  • Coating / Plating Evaluation
along with variety of other metallurgical tests.

Our laboratory has the expertise and flexibility to adopt new test methodology when required. So, if you require a test that is outside our current scope, give us a call, we’re more than happy to discuss your requirements.
